Patients’ experience with family doctor’s respect

How patients rated the way their doctor showed respect for what they had to say at their most recent visit. (see data dictionary)

What do you think?

  • What does showing respect for a patient mean to you?
  • How might your experiences with your family doctor compare to those reported by other Albertans?

Understanding “felt respected”

In surveys conducted between October 2018 and March 2023, the HQCA asked patients who recently visited their doctor:

  • How would you rate the way your doctor showed respect for what you had to say in your most recent visit?

Patients could choose “excellent / very good / good / fair / poor”.

Patient experience is likely better if patients feel their needs are paid attention to, their emotional and physical health are cared for, they are given information about their health and choices, and they are treated with dignity. If patients perceive they are being respected, their experience of care will be better.

Considerations when viewing the results

As primary care providers work to develop a better understanding of how they could improve this rating, other questions can be asked, such as:

  • Is care provided in a manner that respects the patient’s needs, preferences, and expectations?
